The Baroque era opened the door for the violin to emerge as a defining voice in music. This program features an all-star cast of CMS violinists performing thrilling solo roles in Baroque concertos, including Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, one of the earliest examples of program music. Linked to sonnets possibly written by Vivaldi himself, the works depict the seasons through musical suggestions of babbling brooks, thunder and lightning, blasts of winter wind, and birdsong.

Georg Philipp Telemann: Fantasia No. 10 in D major for Violin, TWV 40:23 (1735)

Arcangelo Corelli: Concerto Grosso in D major for Strings and Continuo, Op. 6, No. 4 (published 1714)
